Qiman 750kV New Construction Project in Xinjiang

Qiman, Xinjiang 750kV Project Camp | A Modular “Blue Fortress” in the Gobi Desert

Rising from the vast and barren Gobi Desert in Qiman, Xinjiang, a temporary construction project composed of 88 container houses has taken shape. With its clean and structured appearance and comprehensive practical functions, it serves as a strong support base for the builders of the 750kV power transmission project, outlining a distinctive silhouette of industrial aesthetics against the boundless desert landscape.

I. Exterior Design: A Blue, White, and Gray Landmark in the Desert

The overall appearance of the project features a blue–white–gray color scheme, which stands out harmoniously against the rugged Gobi environment.

The three main buildings are unified with bright blue roofs, giving the entire complex a refreshing and vibrant look. Under the contrast of clear skies and yellow desert sands, the design softens the heavy industrial feel while creating a strong visual identity.

The main building frames use classic white modular structures, with clean and crisp lines that enhance the sense of order and openness throughout the complex. The assembled glass curtain walls adopt a combination of gray frames and Ford blue glass. The gray frames provide a stable and solid appearance, while the Ford blue glass ensures excellent natural lighting and effectively resists strong desert sunlight and sandstorms, achieving a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics.

The office area is composed of Z-shaped foldable container houses, flat-pack container houses, and corridor container houses. This modular arrangement creates a layout that is dynamic yet well-organized. The surrounding fencing and hardened ground surfaces further strengthen the spatial boundaries of the complex, giving the entire project a distinctive “fortress-like” character within the open desert.

II. Functional Layout: A Comprehensive Logistics Support Hub

The project includes 119 container houses, forming a complete system that integrates office, residential, and service functions, effectively solving logistical challenges in the harsh desert environment.

Core Office Area

Standard offices

Archive and document rooms

Conference rooms

The modular design allows the space to be flexibly divided or combined, meeting the needs of both large team meetings and quiet individual workspaces.

Living and Support Area

Rest rooms

Bathrooms and shower facilities

Recreation rooms

These facilities provide a comfortable living environment for long-term on-site staff, helping relieve fatigue after demanding outdoor work.

Emergency Support Area

A dedicated medical room capable of handling minor illnesses and emergency situations, ensuring the health and safety of project personnel.

In terms of detail design, all operable windows are equipped with insect screens, ensuring proper ventilation while effectively blocking sand, dust, and insects, creating a cleaner and more comfortable indoor environment.

III. Craftsmanship: Reinforced Design for Extreme Environments

Considering the strong winds typical from March to May in the project area, the structural safety of the buildings has been specially reinforced.

Square steel pipe reinforcements have been added to key structural positions around the office buildings to improve overall resistance to deformation.

Wind-resistant reinforcement components are installed throughout the surrounding structures, significantly enhancing the buildings’ wind resistance, ensuring stability even during strong desert winds.

The modular assembly construction method also allows for rapid installation and easy disassembly, making the buildings reusable for future projects. This approach not only meets the efficiency requirements of temporary construction, but also supports material recycling and environmentally friendly construction practices.

This temporary construction complex is not only a logistics support base for the power transmission project, but also a vivid example of industrial design adapted to extreme environments.

Amid the vast Gobi Desert, with its orderly blue rooftops, comprehensive functional layout, and reinforced structural design, the project provides frontline builders with a warm, efficient, and reliable “desert home,” contributing solid support to the successful advancement of the 750kV power project.
